Heartland Therapy Connection Play Therapy & PCIT

Heartland Therapy Connection is empowering families and supporting children through play therapy and PCIT.
Play is the primary language of children. It can be used as a powerful tool to unlock understanding, process trauma, address anxieties, and learn life-long coping skills. The integration of play in the therapeutic setting helps children and teenagers interpret what they are feeling and fully express themselves.
Building positive connections in the brain is especially important for children and adolescents during these key developmental periods. Through play therapy, children learn critical coping skills, process trauma, experience less anxiety, improve their relationships, and come to enjoy their visits, viewing them as a routine break from their daily lives where they can relax and express themselves.
If your child is struggling with challenging behaviors such as physical or verbal aggression, emotional outbursts, meltdowns, tantrums, or difficulty regulating emotions, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) could be the right solution for you. PCIT is an evidence-based therapy method for children ages 2-7 that is performed in 2 phases over the course of 12-18 weeks.
Through PCIT, you will learn positive parenting skills, effective discipline and behavior management techniques, and improved communication and emotional skills, all of which will help you be a better, more impactful parent. Heartland Therapy Connections offer both in-person and telehealth PCIT programs.
Heartland Therapy Connection offers counseling services as an out-of-network provider, with affordable rates ranging from $50 to $185.

Mary Kate Short is a licensed clinical social worker and Gottman Level 1 Relationship Therapist with extensive experience in the field of play therapy for children and teenagers ages 3 to 18. She is also trained in PCIT and has worked one-on-one with children and families for 15 years in numerous settings, ranging from hospitals to private practices.
Mary Kate specializes in providing therapy for the whole family unit. Undergoing therapy as a unit is one of the most effective approaches to child therapy. Establishing a strong support system within the family is an essential component. The addition of a supportive and engaged caregiver makes a significant difference in a child’s therapy journey. Oftentimes, the issues being addressed with the child impact the family as a whole, and working as a unit is beneficial for all.
