CIT (Counselor in Training)

Jack Sweeney

Jack Sweeney (he/him) is a Master of Counseling student at UMKC completing his internship at Heartland Therapy Connection, in Kansas City, MO. He enjoys working with clients who feel stuck, burnt out, or disconnected from who they want to be. When it feels like you’ve tried everything and nothing is working, it’s easy to fall into shame and self-blame. Jack provides individual therapy to clients in our Brookside office and online.

I aim to work alongside my clients to help rewrite their stories in a way that feels aligned with their goals and values. My style is open, warm, and direct. I work to create a safe and collaborative space where you feel empowered to explore your unique experiences, values, and strengths. Together, we’ll work to identify and build up your resources to navigate environments and systems that often weren’t built with you in mind.

I can help with:

  • Life transitions and identity exploration
  • Navigating neurodivergence
  • Traumatic experiences

Who my best fits are:

  • Perfectionists and intellectualizers
  • Adults and young adults

Jack integrates skills and techniques from ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), narrative therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and IFS (Internal Family Systems) in his work, with an eye towards larger systems that influence our collective experiences. Jack believes that it is important to meet clients where they’re at, working towards change without shame or judgment

Jack provides in-person and telehealth services, and works with reduced rate, private pay clients.
