If you’ve ever looked into starting therapy but felt unsure about the cost or where to begin, working with an intern therapist might be a great fit. These are graduate-level counseling students in the final stage of their training—and while they’re still learning, they’re also bringing a lot to the table.
We occasionally welcome interns to the Heartland team. They work closely with licensed professionals, bring fresh insight from their coursework, and are deeply committed to learning and supporting their clients. Whether you’re new to therapy or simply looking for a more affordable option, working with a student therapist can be a positive and empowering experience.
What Is an Intern Therapist?

Kansas City Counselors
An intern therapist is a student currently enrolled in a graduate counseling program with a focus such as mental health, couples and family, or school counseling. As part of their degree, they’re required to complete supervised clinical hours—real therapy sessions with real clients. This hands-on experience helps them apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world situations through practicum and internship experiences.
But they’re not doing it alone. Interns are closely supervised by fully licensed clinicians, such as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) or Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs). These supervisors meet regularly with interns to review sessions, offer guidance, and ensure that each client is receiving ethical, high-quality care.
Supportive, Affordable, and Supervised Care
It’s completely normal to wonder if working with someone still in training might feel “less than.” But in reality, these early-career therapists often bring energy, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping others. Plus, they’re learning the most current, evidence-based approaches in the field today.
Here are a few reasons clients choose to work with a student or intern:
- Lower Cost, Same Careful Attention
Intern sessions are typically offered at a reduced rate, making therapy more accessible. This can be a game-changer if you’re looking for consistent support without financial strain. - Supervised, Not Solo
Behind every intern is a licensed professional who’s reviewing cases, offering mentorship, and helping guide their development. So even though your therapist is still in training, you’re still receiving thoughtful, backed care. - Fresh Perspective
Interns are actively learning and growing. They often blend classic approaches like CBT and person-centered therapy with newer, research-backed strategies. That means you’re getting someone curious, current, and motivated to support your goals. - A Supportive Relationship
Many people find newer therapists to be especially approachable and easy to talk to. They’re excited to connect and help with new clients.
