Below is a list of books that illustrate and explain (in kid terms) why we celebrate Pride Month. They also teach the meaning behind Pride. These children’s books can help parents teach their children that love comes in many forms.
The Meaning of Pride, written by Rosiee Thor, illustrated by Sam Kirk
This book introduces young readers to “diverse LGBTQ+ figures – from historical activists to contemporary athletes and artists.” With colorful illustrations and powerful images of a community that represents love and unity, this book teaches children what these relationships mean and why they are equally important as any other relationship.
Rainbow: A First Book of Pride, by Michael Genhart, illustrated by Anne Passchier
This children’s book celebrates rainbow families and emphasizes the importance of loving one another. This sweet and colorful book teaches children the meaning behind each colorful stripe in the rainbow.
Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, by Rob Sanders, illustrated by Steven Salerno
This book is highly rated and recommended as a favorite children’s book. It is based on a true story of how the Gay Pride flag came to be recognized as a symbol for the LGBTQ+ community. This story allows young readers to follow the history of how Harvey Milk and Gilbert Baker created this symbolic flag and how it has grown to represent rainbow relationships across the globe. “A story of love, hope, equality and pride.”
These books give young readers the opportunity to learn the history of the LGBTQ+ community. They also help to understand the fight this community has fought for basic human rights. As parents, we have the opportunity to raise our children to be allies and make a positive difference. We can teach our children to accept and stand up for those who are different from us.
It is important to be open and honest with our children about the discrimination this community continues to endure. If you find it difficult to have these conversations with your little ones, then these books are an excellent source of information. You can find all of the books listed above on Amazon.
